Ripon 10 Mile 2012
There was a good turnout of Swaledale runners at the 'Ripon 10', the second of the Yorkshire Dale Series, on Sunday 13th May, although there were a few notable absences dute to injury - John Wilson, Mike Jefferies and Erika Johnson. (Sorry if I've missed anyone else! ) Hopefully, they will be fit and well for the rest of the season.
Conditions were surprisingly good, considering the amount of rain we had all week. The route takes in road, track trail and woods, but we all managed to stay clean and dry. It's a tough course with lots of climbs, but the surrounding countryside and beautiful views almost made up for the 'pain' endured! Some of our ladies posted impressive times; Jackie Keavney, finishing alongside Martin Randall in 01:12:59; Jess Young, 01:24:31 and Ione Dowson, 01:29:46. Stuart Clarkson,01:23:20, was a little disappointed to see Ronnie Cassar, 01:22:59, storm past him with half a mile to go, but he almost caught him at the finish! Other times are: Stuart Hardcastle, 01:21:12, Peter Devlin, 01:27:12, Janet McRae, 01:27:23, John Hunter, 01:31:44, Marian Hunter, 01:37:01, Simon Dowson, 01:40:40 and Julis Spittle, 01:44:25.

DogsMembers are politely reminded that dogs should not be brought on club runs on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night. For informal runs organised at the weekend, please check with the organiser to see if it is appropriate to bring your dog. Please note that dogs must be kept under close control when using countryside routes. For further information see the Natural England webiste. Okay, now that I've got that disappointing and shameful bit (brief mention of that later) out of the way after the impressive times our members achieved in the London Marathon, I'd like to report on this new road marathon that took place north and south of the Wear at the weekend. Carlton Challenge 2012I had been thinking about having a go at some of the Esk Valley Fell runs since last year as I thought it would be my type of running. Jackie has always said how good they are and Neil and Roz did a few last year and said I would enjoy them. The first race in the Summer NEHRA series was the Carlton Challenge on 2nd May 2012. I was a bit dubious about doing this first race as it had been the Fountains 10k on the Sunday and the first Midweek League at Ilkely the night before, but Mike had been encouraging (baiting!!) me to do it. Having had a good and enjoyable (if very wet) run at Fountains and a terrible run at the Midweek league I thought I would go and have a go anyway, with no pressure, to see what it would be like. Mike drove us and I have to say I was getting a bit nervous as we drove up Carlton Bank and saw the steepness of it. We parked right next to the start, registration was held in the organizer's car, very relaxed and informal, £6 per race with the same number used for all the races. There was a good turn out of Swaledale runners, myself, Mike, Jackie, Jess, Derek, Jonathan and Louise. For most of us this was our third race in four days. Last Updated (Monday, 07 May 2012 09:48)
Manchester Marathon 2012Having run the Lakeside Way Marathon on the hottest day of a very warm March, it seemed fitting that I should run my next marathon on one of the wettest days of the wettest April since records began. I don't like running in hot weather, so I wasn't too daunted by the forecasts of persistent heavy rain and strong winds. Ignoring all the runners in vests and shorts I donned full winter gear and left a complete set of warm dry clothes in the baggage tent. The young cadets who were manning the tent didn't seem to have much of a system going as we handed over our bags, but I assumed they would have plenty of time to sort them while we were running.
Gisborough MoorsIn the Gisborough Moors fell run on Sunday 15th April Mike Jeffreries was 62nd in 105.08, despite having run 22 miles at the Wensleydale Wander the day before.Tracey Hunter was 152nd in 121.20 and Claire Stewart 170th in 125.52. In all 223 runners took part. There is just one race left now in the NEHRA winter fell series. |
Coast to coast relayIn July we're going to do the coast to coast relay from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. All abilities welome. We will be doing the run over 3 days. The total distance is about 180 miles, 60 miles per day. This will be broken down into approx 3 mile legs, with a minimum of 2 runners of similar abilitiy on each leg. We will run on a mixture of 'B' roads, cycle paths and good footpaths where possible, with mini bus transport and support all the way. The pace for the run is worked out at an average of 10 mins per mile, some will run faster, but some will also be slower, so it should average out. DATES Sunday July 8th: St Bees to Pooley bridge Saturday July 14th: Pooley Bridge to Richmond Sunday July 22nd: Richmond to Robin Hood's Bay CHARITIES All money raised will be evenly split between the following four charities: Yorkshire Air Ambulance Yorkshire Cancer Research Alzheimer's Drop-in Centre Richmond Mencap Northallerton Sponsorship forms will be available at the clubhouses shortly. Last Updated (Saturday, 28 April 2012 10:52) Fountains 10K 2012Woke Sunday morning, checked outside, cloudy and dry! Perhaps the weather man got it wrong, terrible forecast. Just after 9 Jackie K arrived, we hopped into my car, picked up Stuart C across town and off to Grantley. Arrived 10ish, parked up, still dry. Went to the school, collected our numbers and met up with a great gang of Swaledale runners, all in good form, then first rain of the day started. Back to the car, we got changed and off for a good warm-up, almost 11 o'clock, strip down to racing kit and we all gathered at the start line. 11am passed, then '10mins delay to the start' was given out. Everyone tried to keep warm, then the wind got up, the heavens opened, brrrrrr, (weather man was just a bit off with his times), and then off we went round up moor road towards the reportedly boggy moor, the hail bouncing off our heads as we went with 'what are we doing' thoughts going through our heads!
