West Witton fell race
Over the bank holiday weekend five Swaledale Runners tackled the West Witton fell race in torrential rain. This is John Wilson' s account of the race:
Bank holiday weekend and under pressure I entered the West Witton fell race. As we approached the start it started to rain again. 6pm and we were off - around 30 runners set off on the senior race with a good few juniors in theirs. The rain just got heavier as we ran up Pen Hill. Steve Brown soon pulled away with the leaders and I could see him until I got to the top, but as I found out later Steve took his own route down, still quicker than me. It was like running blind with the thunder-like rain. How Derek saw where to go running in glasses I will never know. I slipped and hurled my way back to the playing fields , had a sprint finish and finished in 37.18 - around 6th overall. Steve Brown was 1st for Swaledale (around 4th overall) then me. Derek Parrington followed after hurting his arm on some wire fencing. Julie Tanner was 2nd lady and Julia Snape followed behind.
